Housing in Hutchinson
Posted Jul 27, 2009 at 11:32am by Jessica Miller

Influenced by comments by several of my fellow YP’s and their stories, I recently wrote a column for the Hutch News about the need for livable rental housing for Young Professionals. And yet, that’s only one area of need in the community regarding housing.

The City recently commissioned a Housing Assessment. Click for the short version or the long version.

I’m not sure what approach the City is going to take to housing. I know it’s a subject being discussed by many, and it’s a HUGE issue, but where from here? How do we start to address this problem?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, solutions, or otherwise. As Young Professionals, this is something that should be at the forefront of our discussions. Quality housing across all income levels is a necessity for the viability of Reno County.

Lack of good home owners

In order to have good homes, there needs to be good home owners. The housing assessment is just a scientific way of saying and showing what we all know, homes south of 11th need work. Another thing the housing assessment shows is income and job trends. As we know Hutch hasn't been a booming town of industry so as jobs and people move, so does the quality of housing. The housing assessment is more or less a wake up call. One was done about 6 years ago or so, and no improvements have been made since that time. Bottom line, it take money. There is no magic wand to fix this. The city made a smart move with getting the Siemens factory in town. Quality paying jobs will help fix our housing situation because that will bring in quality home owners.
